Five signs your office chairs need reupholstering, how to tell if a chair is worth recovering or replacing, and what to check before you get a quote. Auckland-wide, quoted free from photos.

Your office chairs need reupholstering when the foam has gone flat, the seat fabric is worn or permanently stained, bonded leather is cracking or peeling, or the chairs no longer suit a refitted office — as long as the frame and mechanism are still sound. Office, boardroom and reception seating is quoted free from photos as part of our commercial upholstery service, and we cover all of Auckland with pick-up and return.

An office chair has a harder life than almost any chair at home. It is sat in for most of the working day, swivelled, leaned back in and rolled across the floor. The covering and foam wear out long before a well-made frame does, which is why recovering good chairs is often the sensible option.

What are the signs your office chairs need reupholstering?

1. The foam has gone flat

If you can feel the seat base or the edge of the shell when you sit down, the foam has lost its support. That is a comfort problem before it is a looks problem, and it matters most for people who sit all day. New foam goes in as part of reupholstering, so you get the support back, not just a new cover.

2. The fabric is worn, pilled or fraying

Wear shows first on the front edge of the seat, where legs slide across it, and on the sides of the back where arms rub. Pilling and shine can sometimes be lived with. Once the weave has thinned or threads are showing, no amount of cleaning will bring it back.

3. There are stains that will not come out

Coffee, ink, food and the darker patch where heads rest on a high back all build up. If a professional clean has not shifted them, recovering is the only way to get a clean, even finish across a set of chairs.

4. Bonded or faux leather is cracking or peeling

Many office chairs are covered in bonded leather or PU, which has a thin plastic top layer over a backing. When that layer starts to crack and flake, it cannot be repaired or conditioned back to life — it keeps shedding until the panel is replaced. Genuine leather that is simply dry or scuffed is a different case and may only need restoring. Our guide to leather versus fabric upholstery explains the difference.

5. The chairs no longer suit the office

After a refit, a rebrand or a move, chairs in the old colour can look out of place among new carpet and workstations. Recovering in a fabric chosen for the new space brings the whole office together without throwing out chairs that still work.

Is it worth reupholstering office chairs or buying new?

It depends on the chair more than the cover. Reupholstering makes most sense for chairs that were well made in the first place.

Chair condition Usually the better option
Good-quality task, boardroom or reception chairs with worn covers and flat foam Reupholster
A matching set you want to keep consistent, or chairs that are hard to replace Reupholster
Sound chairs with a failed gas lift or castor, plus worn covers Replace the part, then reupholster
Budget chairs with a cracked shell or broken base Usually replace

Boardroom and conference chairs are often the strongest case: they tend to be better built, they are seen by clients, and a set needs to match. A set also costs less per chair than a single chair, because fabric is cut as one batch. If we look at your photos and think a chair is not worth doing, we will say so.

What should you check before reupholstering an office chair?

Upholstery covers the seat, the back and any padded arms. The moving parts are separate, so check them first and you will not end up with a beautiful cover on a chair that will not stay up.

  • Gas lift. Set the chair to your height and sit for a few minutes. If it slowly sinks, the gas lift has failed.
  • Tilt and lock. The back should tilt smoothly and lock where you set it.
  • Castors and base. Castors should roll freely, and the star base should have no cracks, especially where the legs meet the centre.
  • Arms and back. Rock the arms and the backrest. A little play is normal; anything loose or cracked at the fixing points needs attention.
  • Seat board or shell. Look underneath. A cracked or delaminating seat board is best replaced while the chair is open.

Mention anything you find when you send photos, so the quote reflects the whole job.

Which fabrics work best on office chairs?

  • Commercial-grade fabric. Look for a high rub-count rating suited to heavy commercial use. Our guide on how to choose upholstery fabric explains rub counts in plain English.
  • Commercial vinyl or faux leather. Wipes clean and suits reception, medical and shared desks. Choose a commercial grade rather than a cheap PU, or you will be back to peeling in a few years.
  • Genuine leather. Suits executive and boardroom chairs, and ages well with basic care.
  • Colour. Mid-tones and textured weaves hide daily wear better than very pale or very dark plain fabrics.

If your building, landlord or fit-out designer has a material or fire-performance specification, send it with your photos and we will quote to it.

How does office chair reupholstery work?

  • Send photos. One of each chair type from the front and side, one of the underside, a close-up of the worst wear, and a count of each type.
  • Get a quote. We come back with a price and an honest view on which chairs are worth doing.
  • Choose fabric. We bring samples or you choose from our range.
  • Pick-up and return. We collect and return across Auckland, and can take chairs in batches so nobody is left standing. We are open seven days, Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm and weekends 9am to 6pm, so collection can happen when the office is quiet.

Frequently asked questions

How much does office chair reupholstery cost in Auckland?
Office, boardroom and reception chairs are quoted free from photos, because the price depends on the chair design, the fabric and whether the foam needs replacing. A set costs less per chair than a single chair.

Can you reupholster just one chair?
Yes. We do everything from a single office chair to a full office or boardroom set.

Can you add our logo to the chairs?
Yes. Logos can be embroidered onto seat backs through our custom embroidery service.

Can you repair a split seam rather than recover the whole chair?
Often, yes, if the rest of the cover is sound. Seam and fabric repairs are listed on our upholstery repairs page.

Do you cover all of Auckland?
Yes: Central, East, West, South and the North Shore, with pick-up and return.
