Reupholstering a dining chair in Auckland typically costs $80–$300 per chair, with fabric and labour included. What does it cost to reupholster a dining chair in Auckland?

All prices exclude GST. The lower end of each band assumes a set done together; single chairs sit higher. Premium fabric above about $60 a metre pushes the total past these ranges.
Reupholstering a full set is better value per chair than a single one — the fabric is cut more efficiently, and the setup work happens once rather than six times. If you have a set, send photos of all of them together.
What are you actually paying for?
Most quotes in this trade arrive as one number with nothing behind it. Here is roughly where the money goes on a standard dining chair.

The fabric line is the one with the widest swing, and it is the one you control.
What drives the cost up or down?
How the seat is built
This is the biggest single factor, and it is decided before you choose anything. A drop-in pad lifts straight out of the frame, gets stripped on the bench and re-covered — fast, and the cheapest chair we do. A seat upholstered directly onto the frame has to be worked in place, around the timber, without marking it. A chair with an upholstered back is effectively two jobs on one frame.
Fabric
A drop-in pad takes roughly half a metre. A seat and back can take up to two. At $30 a metre that is $15 against $60; at $80 a metre it is $40 against $160 — on identical chairs, for identical labour. If your fabric has a pattern that needs matching across a set, allow more metreage again. We can source trade fabrics, often below retail, and we will tell you honestly which ones survive daily meals, kids and afternoon sun through a dining room window.
Foam and webbing underneath
Dining chairs take more punishment than almost any furniture in the house — they get sat on hard, dragged across floors and leaned back on. Foam compresses and webbing stretches. While the chair is open, replacing both is inexpensive, and it is the difference between a chair that looks new and one that is new to sit on.
Detailing
Buttoning, piping, contrast welt, stud work and skirts each add hours. On a plain seat they are optional; on a period chair they are usually what makes it worth keeping.
Set size
Six chairs cost less per chair than one. The fabric is cut as a batch and the pattern is planned across the whole set, which also means the chairs actually match when they come back.
Is it cheaper to reupholster dining chairs or buy new?
Almost always cheaper to reupholster, if the frames are sound. A set of six solid-timber dining chairs, new, starts around $2,500 and climbs quickly. Reupholstering the same six typically runs $480–$1,800 — and solid old chairs are usually better made than what that money buys new.
The frames are what decide it. Look for:
- Solid timber, not veneered particle board. Look underneath at the seat rails — you should see real timber and proper joints, not staples into chipboard.
- Joints that are tight, or loose but repairable. A wobbly chair with sound timber can be re-glued and cramped. A cracked rail can often be repaired while the chair is stripped.
- A shape you actually like. If the chairs suit the table and the room, that is reason enough. Replacing them means starting that search over.

Can you just recover the seats yourself?
On a plain drop-in pad, some people do — it is the one dining chair job that is genuinely approachable at home. Where it goes wrong is the corners, the tension across the pad, and the moment the old foam turns out to be gone. If you have tried one and the second one is still in the garage, that is normal.
