How Much Does It Cost to Repair or Fix Couches in Auckland?

What it costs to repair or reupholster a couch in Auckland in 2026 — typical prices by couch size, what drives the cost up or down, how to tell whether your couch is worth repairing, and how long the work takes. Free quotes from photos.

Repairing or reupholstering a couch in Auckland typically costs between $600 and $1,800. A two-seater usually lands between $600 and $1,200, and a three-seater between $900 and $1,800, with fabric and labour included. Smaller repairs — restitching a split seam, replacing the foam in a single cushion, refixing a sagging spring — cost considerably less than a full recover, and we quote those from photos before any work starts.

What follows is what those figures are actually made of, how to tell whether your couch is worth the spend, and how long the work takes.

What does couch repair and reupholstery cost in Auckland?

Couch type Typical Auckland cost (2026)
Single-seat armchair $300 – $700
Two-seater couch $600 – $1,200
Three-seater couch $900 – $1,800
Sectional or corner suite $1,500 – $3,000

All prices exclude GST.

These are typical Auckland ranges covering both fabric and labour. Where a job lands inside its range comes down to two things you control — the fabric you choose and how much of the couch you want rebuilt — and one you do not, which is the condition of the frame underneath. Every quote we give is fixed before work begins, so the number you agree to is the number you pay.

Should you repair your couch or reupholster it?

These are two different jobs at two very different prices, and plenty of people ask for the expensive one when they need the cheaper one.

A repair fixes a specific fault while leaving the existing cover in place: restitching a seam that has split, replacing the foam in a cushion that has gone flat, refixing or replacing a broken spring, or patching a tear. If the fabric is still in good condition and the problem is localised, this is almost always the right call and costs a fraction of a full recover.

Reupholstery strips the couch back and recovers it completely in new fabric. It is the right choice when the cover is worn through, faded across the whole piece, permanently stained, or when you simply want a different look. It is also the moment to replace tired foam and sort out the springs, because everything is already open.

If you are not sure which one you need, send us photos. We will tell you honestly if a repair will do the job — and we will also tell you if a piece is not worth spending money on at all.

What affects the cost of couch repair and reupholstery?

Size and type of couch

The single biggest driver. A small armchair uses a fraction of the fabric and hours a corner suite does. Loose-cushion couches take longer than tight-seated ones, and anything with a curved or buttoned back takes longer again.

Fabric choice

This is where you have the most control over the final figure. A standard three-seater takes roughly 12–18 metres of fabric. At $30 a metre that is $360–$540 in material; at $80 a metre it is $960–$1,440 — on the same couch, for the same labour. Leather and designer fabrics sit at the top of the range, and hard-wearing mid-range fabrics do the job well in most Auckland homes. We can source trade fabrics, often below retail, and advise which ones survive sun, kids and pets.

Labour

Professional upholstery in Auckland generally runs $50–$100 an hour. Detailed work — button tufting, piping, matched patterns, custom shapes — takes more hours and costs more. There is no way around this: the labour is the craft.

Condition of the frame, springs and foam

If the frame is loose or a spring has gone, that gets fixed before any new fabric goes on. It adds to the total, but recovering a couch without sorting what is underneath is money wasted — there is nothing sadder than beautiful new fabric on a couch that still sags.

Extra detailing

Custom buttons, piping, contrast stitching, zips and skirts all add time and materials. They are worth it on a piece you love and easy to leave off a piece you just need working again.

Is your couch actually worth repairing?

Some couches are worth every dollar and some are not. These are the signs of one that is:

  • A hardwood frame. Knock on the base — it should sound solid rather than hollow. Look for corner blocks and proper joinery rather than staples and particle board.
  • Good springs. Eight-way hand-tied or well-made sinuous springs are a sign the couch was built to last. Most quality couches made before the 1990s have them.
  • A shape you actually like. If a couch fits your room properly and you like the proportions, that alone is often reason enough — replacing it means starting that search again.
  • Sentimental or heritage value. An inherited piece or a well-made older couch is usually worth restoring rather than replacing.

The rough rule: if replacing your couch with something of genuinely equivalent construction would cost $2,500 or more, repairing or reupholstering the one you have is almost certainly the better decision — and it keeps a perfectly good frame out of landfill.

How long does couch repair take in Auckland?

Smaller repairs are often back with you within a few days. A full recover typically takes one to two weeks, including time to order the fabric you have chosen. We confirm the timeline with your quote, and we pick up and deliver across Auckland — Central, East, West, South and the North Shore.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to repair a couch in Auckland?
A repair costs far less than a full recover, because the existing fabric stays on. Restitching a seam, replacing the foam in one cushion or refixing a spring are all small jobs. A full reupholstery runs $600–$1,800 for most two- and three-seaters. Send photos and we will price the specific fault rather than quoting you for the whole couch.

Is it cheaper to reupholster or buy a new couch?
If the frame and springs are sound, reupholstery usually costs well under an equivalent-quality new couch — and you keep the shape, size and comfort you already know. If the frame is flat-pack or the couch was cheap to begin with, replacing it is often the honest answer, and we will say so.

Can I supply my own fabric?
Yes. You are welcome to supply your own, and we can also source trade fabrics that are often better priced than retail. We will tell you how much you need before you buy so you are not left short mid-job.

Do you cover all of Auckland?
Yes — Central, East, West and South Auckland and the North Shore, with pick-up and delivery, and free quotes from photos anywhere in the region.
