Where your sofa lands inside that range comes down mostly to one thing you control — the fabric — and one you do not: the condition of the frame and springs underneath.

What are you actually paying for?
Most quotes in this trade arrive as a single number with nothing behind it. Here is roughly how a three-seater breaks down, so you can see which parts you can move.

The fabric line is the one with the widest swing, and it is entirely your decision. Everything else is dictated by the sofa itself.
What drives the cost up or down?
Fabric
A standard three-seater uses 12–18 metres of fabric. At $30 a metre that is $360–$540 in material; at $80 a metre it is $960–$1,440 — on the same sofa, for exactly the same labour. Fabric choice is the single biggest lever on the final price and it is entirely in your control. We can source trade fabrics, often below retail, and we will tell you honestly which ones hold up to New Zealand sun, kids and pets, and which ones only look good in the showroom.
Foam and cushion replacement
If your cushions have lost their shape, replace the foam while the sofa is open. High-density foam for a three-seater’s seat cushions typically adds $200–$450. It is worth doing — there is nothing sadder than beautiful new fabric on a sofa that still sags the moment you sit down.
Spring and frame condition
Well-made sofas use coil or sinuous spring systems. If springs have broken or shifted, we repair them before any new fabric goes on, typically $100–$300. On a quality frame this is money well spent; it is the difference between a sofa that lasts another fifteen years and one that feels tired again in two.
Number of cushions and complexity
A simple box-shaped sofa with tight seats is faster to reupholster than one with multiple loose cushions, decorative piping, button tufting or a skirt. Each additional element adds hours, and hours are the largest part of the bill.
Is your sofa worth reupholstering?
Not every sofa is. These are the signs of one that is:
- A hardwood frame. Knock on the base — it should sound solid, not hollow. Look for corner blocks and proper joinery rather than staples and particle board.
- Eight-way hand-tied springs. A mark of quality construction. Most well-made sofas from before the 1990s have them.
- A brand or heritage piece. Many well-built sofas from quality New Zealand and imported makers are excellent candidates.
- A shape and size you love. If a sofa fits your room perfectly, that alone is often reason enough — replacing it means starting that search over.
The working rule: if replacing your sofa with something of genuinely equivalent quality would cost $2,500 or more, reupholstery is almost certainly worth it. If the frame is flat-pack or the sofa was inexpensive to begin with, we will tell you that too.
