The best time to book boat upholstery before summer is now: ideally before Labour Weekend, and certainly by early November. Most marine repairs take about three working days from the day you accept the quote, and bigger jobs like a full seat set or a new cover take seven to ten working days. The work itself is quick. The wait is the queue, because marine work in Auckland bunches hard into October, November and December as everyone gets their boat ready for the Christmas break.
This page is about timing: what to look at on the boat this month, how long each kind of job takes, and how to get your booking in so the boat is ready when the weather is.
Why does boat upholstery get busy before summer?
Because nearly every boat owner in Auckland has the same deadline. The season opens around Labour Weekend, the summer holidays start a couple of months later, and the first proper trip out of the season is when people notice the split squab, the opened seam on the bimini or the cover that leaked all winter.
That means enquiries pile up from October through December. A repair that takes three working days in July still takes three working days in November — but in November it may not start the day you ring. As our boat upholstery cost guide puts it, the three-day figure is how long the job takes, not a promise about how soon it can start in the middle of the rush.
The fix is simple: get photos to us before the rush, so your job is quoted and in the diary rather than waiting behind everyone else’s.
How long does boat upholstery take before summer?
| Type of job | Typical turnaround from quote acceptance | Price guide (excl GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Restitch a seam or patch a split | About 3 working days | from $80 |
| Recover a squab over sound foam | About 3 working days | from $100 |
| Replace a squab or cushion (new foam and cover) | About 3 working days | $150 – $200 each |
| Full seat set, new bimini or new boat cover | Typically 7–10 working days | Bimini from $600, cover from $800 |
All prices exclude GST. Every timeframe is confirmed with your quote, before you commit to anything.
Count backwards from the day you want the boat back. If that is the first weekend of the holidays and you need a new cover, you want the quote accepted with a clear fortnight of working days in hand, plus whatever queue there is. Covers and biminis also need measuring on the boat first, so allow for that step too.
What should I check on the boat now?
Do a quick walk-round on a dry day this month. You are not deciding repair versus replace yet — you are working out whether there is anything to book. Our boat seat repair guide has five detailed checks (thumbnail, seams, squeeze, underside, staple line) if you want to go further. In short:
- Seams. Bleached, fluffy or parting thread means the stitching has gone. Catch it now and it is a restitch.
- Foam. Press the middle of each squab. Squelching or water at the seams means the foam is wet, and wet foam is usually replaced.
- Covers. Check zips, press studs and the seams along the top, where the sun hits hardest. A cover that leaks is soaking the seats underneath it.
- Biminis. Hold the canvas up to the light. Thin and translucent means it is near the end; opened seams on sound canvas are a repair.
If you want to understand why it is always the seams and the foam that go first, see why boat seats fail and what actually lasts.

A pre-summer checklist for boat owners
- Walk round every seat, squab, cushion and bolster in daylight and note anything split, opened or soft.
- Take the cover and bimini off and look at them flat, not just fitted.
- Photograph each problem: one wide shot of the whole seat or cover, one close-up of the worst spot, and the underside if you can reach it.
- Count your squabs and cushions, and note the boat type and rough size.
- Decide when you need the boat back, and when you can do without the seats or cover.
- Decide whether you want us on site, a pickup, or to drop the pieces in yourself.
- Send it all through on WhatsApp and get the job in the diary.
Do you come to the boat, or does it come to you?
Whichever suits the job. We work three ways across Auckland — Central, East, West, South and the North Shore:
- On site. We come to the boat for anything that has to be measured or fitted in place: covers, biminis, helm seats and fixed upholstery. We have worked at marinas across the city, including Westhaven, the Viaduct, Half Moon Bay, Silo Marina and the Orams dry stack.
- Pickup and delivery. We collect loose squabs and cushions, do the work in the workshop and bring them back.
- Drop-off. If you are passing, bring the squabs or cushions in yourself.
Removable pieces are usually best done in the workshop, where the machines and materials are. Anything that has to be patterned to the boat starts with a visit. Full detail of what we do is on our marine upholstery page.
What is the best way to book quickly?
Send photos. A good set of photos lets us price most repairs and recovers without a visit, which takes days out of the process at the busiest time of year. Include:
- A wide shot of each seat, squab or cover.
- A close-up of the worst seam, split or stain.
- The underside or base, if you can get to it.
- A rough measurement and what boat it is.
We come back with a price and an honest view on repair versus replace, then a fixed quote before anything starts. We are open seven days — Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm and weekends 9am to 6pm — so a weekend at the boat is a perfectly good time to send them.
Frequently asked questions
When is too late to book boat upholstery for summer?
There is no hard cut-off, but the later you leave it, the more you are queuing behind other boats. A small repair booked in early December can still be done before Christmas; a new cover booked then is tight. For anything bigger than a repair, aim for October.
Can I keep using the boat while the work is done?
Often, yes. If only a few squabs or cushions come off, the boat can still go out. Covers and biminis are measured on the boat, made in the workshop and then fitted, so you are only without the old one for a short time. We will tell you what to expect when we quote.
Should I fix small seam splits now or wait until autumn?
Fix them now. An open seam lets water into the foam every time it rains or a wave comes aboard. Caught early it is a restitch from $80; left for a season it usually means new foam as well.
Do I need someone on the boat when you come?
Not always, but we need access to it. Talk to us when you book and we will work out the easiest arrangement for your marina or mooring.
