Yes — we do boat upholstery at Viaduct Harbour, working on-site at the berth or taking pieces back to the workshop, and we schedule the work around your bookings so a charter or event boat loses as little time on the water as possible. We have worked at the Viaduct before, and we cover seats, squabs, cabin upholstery, canvas and covers on large launches, charter boats and event vessels. Quotes are free from photos.
For a boat that earns money, the question is rarely just “what will it cost?” It is “how many days will it be out of action?” This page is about answering that one.
Why is upholstery different on a working boat?
Viaduct Harbour is home to larger vessels — the marina takes boats from roughly 15 to 60 metres — including large launches, charter and event boats as well as yachts. That changes the job in three ways.
- Downtime costs money. A private boat can sit without cushions for a week. A charter boat with a booking on Saturday cannot.
- Wear is heavier and more uneven. The seats nearest the boarding point, the bar or the best view wear first. Passenger traffic, wet swimwear, sunscreen and spilled drinks all take their toll.
- Appearance is part of the product. Guests notice a split seat or a faded cushion in photos. On a commercial vessel, tired upholstery is a presentation problem as much as a comfort one.
How do you work around charter bookings?
Tell us your booking calendar when you ask for the quote, and we plan the job around it rather than the other way round. In practice that means:
- Measuring and patterning between bookings. We can come to the berth on a quiet day to measure and template, then make the work up in the workshop while the boat keeps running.
- Swapping pieces in a single gap. Where squabs and cushions come out, we can collect them after one booking and have them back before the next where the job allows. Most marine repairs take about three working days from quote acceptance; larger jobs such as a full seat set or a new cover typically take seven to ten working days, and we confirm the timing with the quote.
- Working early, late or at weekends. We are open seven days, Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm and weekends 9am to 6pm, which gives more room to fit around a busy charter week.
Can you do the seats in stages?
Yes, and on a working boat it is often the smartest way to do it. Rather than taking every seat off at once, we can recover or replace the upholstery in sections — the saloon one week, the flybridge or aft deck the next — so the boat stays usable throughout.
Staging also lets you spread the cost and deal with the worst areas first. The trade-off is colour: if new fabric goes in next to sun-faded originals, the difference shows. Where that matters, we will tell you honestly whether to do a full area at once so it ages evenly.
| Approach | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Everything at once | A planned off-season refit, or a full change of colour scheme | The boat is out of service for the whole job |
| In stages, area by area | Boats with steady bookings that cannot stop for long | Matching new fabric to faded originals within the same area |
| Repairs only, between bookings | Sound upholstery with split seams or isolated damage | Repairs on perished vinyl only buy a season |
Can you match the existing interior?
Usually, yes — and on a charter boat it decides how you stage the job. If we can match the existing vinyl and piping closely, replacing only the worst seats between bookings works well. If we cannot, it is usually better to do one whole area at a time so guests never see a mismatched set. Send daylight photos with the quote request and we will tell you which applies before you commit.
What fabrics stand up to heavy passenger use?
For commercial boats we lean towards durability first: UV-stabilised marine vinyl that wipes clean, marine-grade thread that does not break down in sunlight, and closed-cell foam that will not hold water when a seam does eventually open. Seating that takes constant traffic benefits from firmer foam and tougher vinyl than a private boat would need.
The detail on fabric choice is in our guide to marine upholstery fabrics for NZ boats, and the reasons seats fail in the first place are in why boat seats fail and what actually lasts.

What else do you do on board?
- Cockpit, deck and flybridge seating — squabs, backrests, bolsters and helm seats.
- Cabin and saloon upholstery — settees, berth cushions and backrests below deck.
- Canvas, biminis and covers — measured and fitted on the boat, made up in the workshop.
- Foam replacement — for squabs that have gone flat or waterlogged.
- Repairs — restitching open seams and patching splits before they let water into the foam.

What does it cost?
Every marine price we publish is in our boat upholstery cost guide, all excluding GST. Commercial interiors vary so much in size and detail that the honest answer is a fixed quote from photos or a visit to the berth. We give you the price and the timeframe before any work starts, so you can plan it against your bookings.
Frequently asked questions
Can you work on the boat at its Viaduct berth?
Yes. We come to the boat to measure, template and fit, and we can do some work on-site. Anything that needs a sewing machine is usually made up in our workshop and brought back. You arrange access with the marina; we work around it.
Can you do the work without cancelling bookings?
Often, yes. Send us your booking calendar with the photos, and we will plan the job in stages or in the gaps between charters where the work allows.
Is the price fixed before work starts?
Yes. Commercial work is quoted as a fixed price and timeframe before we start, so you can plan it against your bookings. Our published marine prices exclude GST.
How quickly can you start?
It depends on the season. Marine work in Auckland gets busy from October to December, so for a boat that needs to be ready for summer charters, the earlier you get photos to us the better.
